If your lifestyle block relies on stored rainwater, a little maintenance goes a long way. Dry Nelson–Tasman summers can stretch your supply, so keeping the system in good shape matters.

Tank maintenance basics

- **Check and clean gutters and downpipes** at least twice a year. Leaf build-up reduces water quality and can block inflow.

- **Inspect the tank inlet screen** and clean it as needed. This stops debris and insects entering the tank.

- **Consider a first-flush diverter** if you do not have one. It diverts the first wash of rain (which carries the most dirt) away from the tank.

- **Check for sediment build-up** every few years. If water is discoloured or smells, the tank may need cleaning by a professional.

Pump care

- Listen for unusual noise, cycling, or pressure drops — these can indicate a failing pump or a pressure-switch problem.

- Check the pump pressure gauge periodically. If pressure is inconsistent, call a pump contractor.

- Keep the pump housing clear of vegetation and debris.

Water quality

- If you drink tank water, consider annual testing for e. coli and other contaminants.

- UV treatment systems need their lamps replaced on schedule — typically annually.

- Filters should be changed per the manufacturer schedule.

When to call a professional

- The pump has stopped or is cycling rapidly

- Water pressure has dropped noticeably

- Water is discoloured, smelly, or tastes different

- You want to increase tank capacity or add a second tank

- You need a new pump or irrigation system
